摘要:A typical calculus of variations problem is to optimize a functional of functions of one variable. The classical approach is to solve the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. In case the functional involves higher order derivatives of the unknown function, the resulting Euler-Lagrange equation becomes a higher order nonlinear differential equation, which is in general difficult, if not impossible, to solve. Over the years, various ‘direct methods’ were developed to tackle such situations, but most of them boils down to the convergence problem of a sequence of complicated functions which is still not quite easy to manage. In this talk, a direct method using integral inequalities to solve calculus of variations problems will be introduced and discussed.
